Physical Therapy Specialization in Turkey
The Honorary President of Hacettepe University, Dr. İhsan Dogramaci, established the first Faculty of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at the university in 1961, thus laying the foundation for the profession of physical therapy in Turkey. It was considered the only faculty for 25 years, and then many departments of physical therapy and rehabilitation were opened.
The first of them was at Istanbul University in 1986, then Dokuz Eylül University in 1993, then Pamukkale University in 1995, then Abant İzzet Baysal University in 1996, then Dumlupınar University in 1997, then Başkent University (BaşkentÜniversitesi) in 1998.
Today, the number of Turkish universities that teach physical therapy has reached approximately 52 universities, both public and private, from which more than 8,000 physical therapists have graduated since 1969, working in Turkish hospitals and medical institutions, and outside the country as well.
